We are pleased to announce our joint participation in Art Collaboration Kyoto (ACK) 2024, with Annely Juda Fine Art, a London-based modern and contemporary art gallery with nearly 60 years of history. In 2022, we presented a groundbreaking exhibition in London that simultaneously showcased Kasimir Malevich's drawings and the White Rock Raku tea bowls of the 15th Raku Kichizaemon・Jikinyū. This exhibition followed the same concept as the previous one held at the Sagawa Art Museum the year before. We are delighted to once again introduce the works of these two artists together in Kyoto.
Kasimir Malevich (born in Kiev in 1879) is widely recognised as a central figure in avant-garde art, the founder of Suprematism, and a pioneer of "non-objective" art. His masterpieces, Black Square (1915) and White on White (1918), are iconic works of modernism that have greatly influenced the development of 20th-century abstract art and minimalism.
The 15th Raku Jikinyū (born in Kyoto in 1949), has devoted his career to exploring the possibilities of the traditional tea bowl format in a constant search for new modes of expression. His tea bowls are characterised by bold sculptural trimming and the creative use of the Yakinuki firing method, demonstrating a new level of creativity. Notably, Jikinyu has cited the impact of Malevich’s Black Square on his artistic practice, describing in his catalogue essay his encounter in person with the work in Moscow in 2015: “Its pure blackness has long affected me and has rooted itself deeply into my consciousness, … the intense black transcended beauty, form and stylistic individuality. It was resolute its will to go beyond coginition”, associating it with “the philosophy embodied in the Black Raku tea bowls of Chōjirō”.
Art Collaboration Kyoto is an art fair dedicated to fostering distinctive collaborations between Host Galleries from Japan and Guest Galleries from abroad. In our joint booth with Annely Juda Fine Art, we will present a selection of Raku Jikinyū’s tea bowls from the White Rock and Black Rock series, produced between 2021 and 2024, alongside a collection of Kasimir Malevich's pencil drawings from the height of the Suprematism movement.
We sincerely look forward to welcoming you at ACK 2024.
The catalogue by Annely Juda Fine Art can be viewed here.
On November 1 (Friday), Raku Jikinyū will hold a talk entitled 'The Beauty of Legacy and Change: Connecting/Transcending' with moderator Yamashita Yukako (Program Director, Art Collaboration Kyoto).
Simultaneous interpretation to English and online streaming will be available.
