About the Gallery
Mitochu Koeki Company was established in 1986 by Toshihiko Hayashi, the father of the current president and director Daisuke Hayashi. Over the past 30 years we have handled a wide range of twentieth century and contemporary works of art from Japan, Europe and North America. As well as ceramics, which is a particular strength, we deal in lacquerwork, metalwork, woodwork and basketry. We have an extensive clientele, including major Japanese museums, overseas institutions and important private collectors. We have worked closely for many years with the Victoria and Albert Museum in helping them to build up their collection of Japanese studio crafts and modern Japanese design. Since 1990 we have actively promoted the ceramics of Lucie Rie and Hans Coper , placing their works in Japanese museums and cultivating a nationwide network of collectors. Our current ambition is to promote a global market for modern and contemporary Japanese ceramics.
