It is our pleasure to announce our exhibition entitled ‘Lucie Rie Bowls & Tea Cups’ presented at Art Fair Tokyo 2024.
In recent years, there has been a growing interest in kōgei (crafts) as a form of expression to be re-valued, which had always been overshadowed by painting and sculpture.
Above all, Lucie Rie stood out by strictly using clay as her medium and continuously demonstrating her artistic expression within the confined realm of vessel form.
Although she did not have direct apprentices, many artists have followed in her footsteps as they explore similar paths.
This year, teacups, representative of Lucie’s domestic ware, will be featured side by side with some of her best examples of bowl.
It is known that Lucie Rie always welcomed visitors to her studio by serving them her homemade Sachertorte.
Tea cups too were certainly one of the endearing items for Lucie, representing many precious moments and memories she cherished.
